German Danube

The first thing I did this morning was catch up on something I had missed yesterday: I cycled through the beautiful little town of Donauwörth. Then I cycled along the Danube again, often on gravel roads. There was a signpost that said «German Danube».

In principle, it was all downhill today too. However, according to the elevation profile of my route, there were two smaller climbs at the beginning and a larger one shortly before the stage finish. In the end, I ended up climbing over 600 metres.

After a long time on gravel through forests and in the middle of nature, I saw an imposing settlement in the distance, so I had to stop and take some photos. I was quite astonished when I saw Neuburg an der Donau from the front a few minutes later. I took a lunch break in the nearby park and couldn't refuse the invitation to sit on a deckchair with a view of the castle and the Danube.

I then continued through forests and farmland to Ingolstadt. I realised once again that the route of EuroVelo Route 6, which I have been following since yesterday and as far as Bulgaria, is not always the fastest choice. And, as already mentioned, contains many gravel roads. But this also means that I pass places of interest. The ride through Ingolstadt's historic city centre was definitely worth it.

After that - who would have thought it - the route mainly followed the Danube again until 7 or 8 kilometres before Kelheim. Now it was time for the final climb. Initially on a tarmac road - which was already very steep in places and not easy to ride - we suddenly entered the forest on a gravel track covered in leaves. It was so steep in places that my rear wheel spun, but somehow I made it up. The way down was similar again, but led past the motorway. I couldn't resist and chose the tarmac road for the last few kilometres. So I was straight down and arrived in Kelheim shortly after 5pm.

My hotel offered a wellness area. Of course, I didn't miss out on this and enjoyed the refreshment before dinner. After shopping in the shopping centre 10 minutes' walk away, the two restaurants I had in mind were already closed. So I went back to the hotel and ate what I had just bought.
