It rolls...
Something I forgot to mention yesterday: I had sunshine all day. And it was the same today. I'm very grateful for that, as it makes the whole thing much more pleasant. The temperatures are still relatively low at night, but the sunshine makes it feel perfect. I'm also not really sweating any more, which means I don't get cold when I make a stop, for example.
Speaking of cool temperatures: after a little over an hour's ride, I met another cycle traveller, the first on this trip. For him, too, I was the first «fully packed» person he had met. He was also cycling the Danube cycle path, but in the other direction, i.e. up the river. He thought I had quite a lot of stuff with me. That's probably true, at least unlike him. I told him I still had a lot of plans and therefore had a tent etc. with me. When he said he had his with him too, I asked him if he was sleeping outside in these temperatures. He told me that unfortunately he hadn't found a suitable place for his tent last night, so he slept on a bench - at 2 degrees Celsius. So that works too, I'll remember that. But I still choose the hotel for now, because I sleep better in a warm bed and get a better night's rest, which is important to me.
After less than 40 kilometres I was already in Regensburg. In the sunshine ;-). What a beautiful city - with lots of tourists - inviting for a break, but for me still a bit early for lunch, as I had already set off at 09:20 today. What followed was every cyclist's dream: sunshine, smooth, fast roads and a bit of a tailwind. I continued eastwards at a brisk pace and was doing so well that I only stopped for my first major break after more than 90 kilometres. Surrounded by lots of people, I enjoyed my lunch in the centre of Straubing. The small town, which I only knew before because of the ice hockey team, is very clean and has chic, colourful houses, like many of the small towns on my route.
Now there were just under 40 kilometres to Deggendorf on the programme. At first, the Danube cycle path made a brand-new impression and so it rolled really well again. But suddenly a no-entry sign blocked the way, now on gravel. As I could easily drive past it, I gave it a go anyway. But after just a few minutes, another cyclist came waving towards me and said the roadworks were impossible to pass. So I turned right and rode a larger loop around the roadworks. Back on the Danube, I soon came to the next driving ban. I ignored it again and this time I was able to drive through. The roadworks were not in progress this Saturday and so nobody was bothered by the cyclists rattling along the gravel track - I was far from the only one. After the roadworks, I cycled on the motorway for a while, as there was hardly any traffic, it was tarmac and exactly parallel to the cycle path on gravel. In the end, despite the diversions of a few kilometres, I reached Deggendorf shortly after 4 pm.
